When considering purchasing your new shutters, there are some facts you should be made aware of. The American shutter industry has gone through major changes as has the rest of America’s manufacturing industry. A few short years ago, most all shutters were made of solid wood or high quality synthetic materials. Things have changed!
You should be aware that a large percentage of shutters sold in America today are no longer manufactured by a local company or even a domestic national manufacturer. Many shutters now sold through local retailers are now manufactured in China. Chinese shutters usually take approximately 8 weeks to be made in China and shipped to the U.S. and delivered to you. Many of these shutters come from American sounding names. Most of the imported shutters are offered in varying qualities of materials. While some of the all wood shutters are of good quality and good appearance, other lower grade shutters are also offered, that may be made of low quality materials like MDF. MDF is another name for particle board. This is a similar material as used in Wal Mart self assemble furniture. Some retailers have been told by the import companies, that MDF makes a good shutter so they believe that MDF shutters are OK, but PolyDesign believes you should know what you are buying. MDF is a very cheap material and yet many retailers selling this product get top retail prices. If you choose to buy MDF quality, do not pay “Solid Wood” or PolyDesign prices. MDF shutters should be considerably cheaper.
Our PolyDesign Shutters are all American Made and often come from a local manufacturer. Our components are extruded, painted, and assembled in America. How do we compete with the $2.00 per day Chinese pay? Our shutters are engineered to be manufactured with very little direct labor which gives us the ability to compete with imported shutters. Our Celuka materials are solid and will not warp, swell (in moist environments), chip, or delaminate. PolyDesign materials will not split when nailed or break off when hit with a tool. We do not have to seal (paint) all exposed cuts (a necessary step with MDF to prevent moisture wicking and resulting swelling). PolyDesign shutters are painted with non yellowing acrylic paints. Our component materials actually cost more than comparable solid wood components and are some of the most expensive materials available for shutters, but we feel the quality and longevity of the product makes it worth the difference.

Also, be aware that some shutter suppliers are buying foreign shutter panels, framing them in the U.S. and calling them American Made which is not the case. We encourage everyone to buy truly American made products, but should you feel that this is not important then at the very least we encourage you to research what you are buying. Remember, in our opinion you always get what you pay for. We just want you be sure that if you choose to buy shutters for your home, you do not pay too much!
